9月13日 Sub sinks Celtic?Alas, Soccer Orb has fallen victim to Susan's profound writer's block. It's more than writer's block, if truth be known. I hate to write. I can't imagine why I ever believed that I wanted to write a book--fiction, God help me--and I am forced to admit that the time that I've wasted researching and writing a medieval mystery story has not only made me crazy, but apparently unemployable. But that's another story.
Anyways...Podaspheria finally paid me a visit a few moments ago. I felt moved to use this space to gloat about obtaining super-fine tickets to the US Open Cup final between the Fire and LA on September 27. At first the Fire required that you buy four tickets and I don't know two other people who like soccer enough to want to go to a Fire game on a Wednesday night.
I fear that the Manchester United-Celtic match is a bit too good for my taste. The score is tied at two at half-time. And here I thought that I would sit down to enjoy a nice rout and, hopefully, goal-fest. But then a former PSV Eindhoven player by the name of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had the temerity to beat van der Sar outright and score a darn good goal. Louis Saha evened it with a penalty after Ryan Giggs was taken down in the box. Now despite Giggs being a favorite from the good old days when United victories were de rigeur, I kinda thought that the penalty was a bit soft. Then he was taken off with an injury. And I had just been congratulating myself for putting Giggs on one of my fantasy teams last week! So Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in as a sub.
Then Saha scored a fine goal to bring the score to 2-1. I don't remember every detail as I was on the phone with The Guy. But a few minutes later a Japanese fellow (Nakamura?) took a lovely left-footed free kick that flew past a statue-like van der Sar.
OLE OLE OLE!!! (Solksjaer, that is).
46th minute!!! 3-2 United!! If only the game were over. Apparently my wish for a goal-fest has been granted.
Good thing that this match is being recorded so The Guy can see it.
Of course, everyone remembers May 26, 1999 when United scored two stoppage-time goals against Bayern to win the Champions League and the "unprecedented treble." And you all remember that the two scorers were Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and Teddy Sheringham, who had been late subs, right? One of the English newspapers printed the following headline the next day:
Subs Sink Germans
Best headline ever, right?*
*except for this one: US BEATS BRAZIL TO WIN WORLD CUP
