25 abril Wishful thinking...Hey
Susan, did you know it's national poetry month? I wanted to pay
tribute in some small way by dedicating the following to you and your
site.
There once was a fan of United
Who got fellow supporters excited.
She convinced the FA
To ban whines from Jose.
Thus muted, he left the Blues blighted.
Shall we agree to count limericks as poetry in the same way we count ketchup as a vegetable? Many thanks to my guest contributor, Steve. I'm pleased to declare that you are the official poet of Soccer Orb. That's not too much of an honor, as this blog is dying a slow death! As always, I am impressed that such a talented econometrician can compose such evocative verse. Dare I say that you should begin working on a book of soccer poetry? 10 abril Osservi sempre dal lato luminoso di vita...Which means always look on the bright side of life in Italian... 6-0 for United in the 65th minute... 09 abril Oh, to be in England now that April's there...Two lucky former Chicago Fire lads made good today at not-so-trendy Fulham. Carlos Bocanegra scored Fulham's only goal in its 3-1 loss to Manchester City. DaMarcus Beaseley scored one of the Man City goals. Bocanegra had a goal last week as well, if I'm not mistaken. I was pleased to see that Clint Dempsey got some time on the pitch late in the game, but I didn't see it and don't know if he played any role in Bocanegra's goal. And two other Yank defenders were part of defensive sides that held the opponents scoreless: Newcastle's Oguchi Onyewu and Reading's Marcus Hahnemann. Tim Howard didn't have a clean sheet, though, as the Everton - Bolton match ended in a 1-1 draw. Have I left out any other EPL Yanks? I realized that I did not need to wear long underwear, insulated boots, two sweaters, and my big puffy coat when I went to an Arsenal game in mid-December. Without all of those layers, plus a scarf, hat, and gloves, I would have frozen to death at the Chicago Fire home opener on April 7. Weather-whining aside, the Fire looked oh-so-sloppy with the exception of two supernovas (or "supernovae" as it is spelled in the trickier crossword puzzles): Justin Mapp and Matt Pickens. Mapp's speed, passing, dribbling, and playmaking are pure quality; not so long ago I would have rejoiced at last week's whispers that Everton may be interested in him during the next transfer window. But now...not so much. I'm not really tuned into the Dempsey situation at Fulham, but he never starts and hasn't had many minutes overall. I would hate to see Justin Mapp wasting away in a similar situation next year. And yet I know that Mapp won't reach his potential if he doesn't play with and against stronger competition. Fortunately for all of us, I have not yet been designated the benevolent dictator for American soccer, so I don't need to lose sleep tonight wondering about the best way to develop our players. Instead, I'll lose sleep fretting about the Roma game at Old Trafford tomorrow. And what about Saturday's FA Cup semifinal match? The law of transitivity has me a little bit worried: Watford beat Portsmouth today and Portsmouth beat United on Saturday. You do the math... |
